How are you?
As I write this, I am in my office at YG looking at its beauty, and it inspires me with HOPE.
Today is EARTH DAY (April 23rd) and we want to dedicate a major part of May to helping support the earth, our original mama, the one we share collectively. We have a lot in store for you this month, from walking, to protecting the bees, to movie nights, we have NEW challenges and a NEW SCHEDULE!
I suppose the greatest challenge of all this up coming month, is knowing how to make a move. The cards that we as fitness centres have been dealt, in the post lock down phase, are pretty much devastating.
We are NOT going to open our studio if we are to wear face masks. Yes we are able to keep two meters apart and have small groups, that is a major privilege.
I would like to take a few paragraphs in this newsletter and depict how Yoga Garden came to be. I read recently an article about how when the NEW NORMAL is going to kick in, settle, what is going to actually occur, is that major corporations, and BRANDS are going to pump so much money into their advertising campaigns, that the entire lockdown phase, wearing masks, not seeing anyone, all the positive environmental changes, homeschooling, handwashing..all of that will be gaslighted* out of our psyche....so that things can go back to normal... so that we can start purchasing, and living the life of comfortably numb consumers. I want to be clear here, and portray Yoga Garden also as a Brand. Our main pillars are Compassion, Strength, and Breath. When Ondrej and I agreed to opening a yoga studio together I immediately told him I want us to be a BRAND and I want us to work with Florian Kowatz(director and owner of KR8 burou in Vienna Austria. The process was really enriching. We spent at least three months responding to elaborate questions, and very much long term, and forward thinking possibilities. What Flo designed was a drawing board for us to always return to, to be able to function as a company that has goals, and structure, that we have pillars and values from which we make decisions, it was(is) brilliant progressive thinking. We have this instrument, and manual from which we always come back to.
We rarely make executive decisions, and exclude others. We always meet and decide on what our plan of action is. Yoga Garden is an inclusive space, which would like to inspire environmental and urban community solutions through both the practice of ASANA but also OFF the mat. We are dedicated in producing a safe space both inside and outside(environment) the studio. This might sound loaded, or far fetched, but the reality is, if we always come back to the drawing board, to our pillars, we are able to make the right decisions together, together apart, and as individuals period. This is not to say that everyone who is part of the Yoga Garden team, or community is constantly reflective of these values.
It takes all sorts of strength, and compassion to create an awesome community, and a lot of long exhales. It takes a lot of courage to get up when we fall. Perhaps it is easier to get up when we have someone to support us. To listen, to hear us,and to give us space. This is the studio we want to be. We want to be a place where you can come and chat, laugh, hug, cry, dance, knit, create and also just walk in and out after your practice if that is your mood.
Here lays the challenge now. In the new normal, in which we are to come together but at a really great distance, and with a lot of self restraint, it will be extremely difficult to implement our values if we don’t have them as a mantra really. We gotta rise and shine and think compassionately CONSTANTLY. We need to alter and re invent our comfort zones, and be critical as well as very generous in our breathing to allow for the right response.
THE WORLD WILL NOT BE THE SAME AGAIN.
We weren’t prepared for this, and we don’t all have the right skills to deal with crisis. We aren’t all good listeners, we don’t all have patience, and we certainly don’t all come from the same privilege.
How do we want to pave the road now? Are we going to be pawns? What steps do we initiate as a team? With whom do we stand in solidarity with?
I strongly believe we need to honour this process no matter how difficult it is, we are all of us walking, waking, and dealing with a new reality, something that we have never experienced before. We are all reading similar and different things and we are all stunned at how to proceed with this limited access of what is happening and going to happen. Many of us will suffer great losses.
AND HERE, LET US ALL EXHALE!!
The practice of Yoga, can shed light on how we are all connected, and interconnected. It is essentially all about connections, and changes. We are all going through major changes, making connections, and also disconnecting. There’s nothing like a global Pandemic to expose how quickly our mother earth can begin to regenerate.
Could we in the NEW NORMAL avoid gaslighting this? Could we as a collective step UP to the challenge and be committed to helping the earth revive? What can we do?
Here are some of our options together, and together apart.
* GASLIGHTING IS A FORM OF PSYCHOLOGICAL
MANIPULATION IN WHICH A PERSON OR A GROUP
COVERTLY SOWS SEEDS OF DOUBT IN A TARGETED
INDIVIDUAL, MAKING THEM QUESTION THEIR OWN
MEMORY, PERCEPTION, OR JUDGMENT, OFTEN EVOKING
IN THEM COGNITIVE DISSONANCE AND OTHER
CHANGES SUCH AS LOW SELF-ESTEEM.
LET’S SUPPORT, RE-CRE8, RE-START, RECYCLE, RE-USE, REDUCE, AND TAKE OFF!!!
What is most at stake is the local economy...artists, musicians, designers, chefs, waiters, producers, directors, massage therapists, hair dressers and you bet ya! YOGA STUDIOS!!the list goes on...
We need to stick together and re-ACT from a place of wisdom, and not fear. We ought to find moments to host collective discussions on the kind of future we are interested in investing in.
One of the best ways to support your well being, is by being in nature. The Czech Republic is phenomenal for its accessible walking paths! This is an incredible opportunity that we are given, to meet and walk, in silence, in groups, to observe how dry the land is, how trees are falling, to hear the birds chirping and to reach a meadow or a field keep our distance and do outdoor yoga.
WHAT IS THE NEW MAY CHALLENGE?
It’s all about FOOD! Meal plans, recipes and sharing our meals together! Weekly Pot Lucks(where every one brings a vegetarian, or vegan dish and we all eat together, talk, kids can play in the studios. (forest/park/meadow.. ;)
This challenge is a very tricky one, it is very hard to stick to a certain way of eating, but if we do it together, and if we can promote restaurants, cafes, and vegetable markets, bulk food stores, we are on board! Are YOU??? What does it cost? IT IS FREE!!!
But it means that you commit to coming to the potlucks once a week and bring a dish for four. Each week we will put out 15 recipes that you can try at home, and tell us about it when we all meet(or not) In order to avoid bringing to many of the same dish, we will have a list circulating for people to sign their names with what they will bring. So, lets spend the month of May eating delicious food together, building new habits.
Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested. You will receive all the meal plans, a directory of restaurants and stores and once a week we can all meet and share food!
