Many of us have a greater understanding of what it means to (alter/change/ transform/
realize) our beliefs, practice, worldview. This pandemic has exposed the smallest and
deepest cracks in all our institutions, and bodies of government. Where a year ago, we
here in Czech were all locked up and isolating, to realize that yes in fact, social distancing,
isolating, and lockdowns, kept our numbers at minimum. Now this time around since
October, our practice of disobedience has the Czech Republic as one of the most Covid
DOES IT MATTER? SURE IT DOES. IT ALL MATTERS.
The roll out on vaccinations could still have us here next year. Which means that YOGA
GARDEN could very well remain on line for a long time to come.
When we are asked to think of our future, and to envision our roles, our function, our
responsibilities, tasks, the evolution of what that field will look like, we need to consider
it in all its spectrum. Often we are good at one fraction or piece of the “job” and then we
gain skills, and experiences and we ameliorate in other parts. Let’s bring in a year ago....
A year ago, we did not know, we were not aware of how our jobs would change, improve
or discontinue altogether. We didn’t realize what the alterations, adjustments and closure
would bring. Hellooo students, zoom? On line?
If you are employed, it is almost guaranteed that your line of work has changed. Either you
work from home, or maybe you are a overworked nurse, and instead of serving people at
the restaurant, you are now a food courier? Maybe you have a lot of time on your hands and because your work has been altogether cancelled, maybe you are
volunteering at a nursing home, at food banks? Or simply struggling to
accept reality. Things have changed. It takes time to re-train, to adjust
and move forward.
Mainly, I am seeing that many people are FLEXIBLE because they
HAVE to be. Not because they want to be. Many people are seeing how
lucky and privileged their lives have been up until now, and how this
disruption(the pandemic) has robbed them of their privileges.
AT YOGA GARDEN, WE HAVE KICKED OFF THE YEAR WITH INCLUSIVITY
I really needed to address all the discrimination that we as people
perpetuate, emulate and digest. It has not been easy to gather on
a weekly basis, nor has the content necessarily been gobbled up
quickly. We talk about racism, sexism, homophobia, agism, body
shaming... How are we as Yoga teachers inviting all walks of life into
our practice, when we reflect a certain image?(Enter the white, skinny,
middle class, young, and able teacher)
I have heard so many people shame others because they are fat, or
overweight or obese. I have heard people say things like “yeah but
they were already sick....” Basically, my ears rarely hear (here in the
Czech) positive, supportive, inclusive language (FEELINGS). The
disregard for being anything other then perfect is really intense here.
It’s as if the mantra is MAKE NO MISTAKE. BE PERFECT. This is hard
to break down because people have been taught this, they have truly
absorbed this worldview. It’s not just going to stop...there will be
HOW HAVE YOU SPENT TIME DEFENDING YOUR BELIEFS? WHAT ARE
YOU WILLING TO SHED? WHAT IS NO LONGER COMING WITH YOU
INTO THE POST PANDEMIC/NEW NORMAL?
These are not easy questions nor do they have quick responses, there
needs to be a process a pause, a moment to review/undo/unlearn...
This is where we are NOW (if we are lucky) If we want to blame our
leaders, and point fingers at what they aren’t doing, we need to
make sure WE ARE DOING something(positive). If we aren’t brave
enough, open minded, loving and supportive...why are we asking the
government to be? They are our reflection. We are not separate from
them. Our inhumanity is scaring me, it is not easy to watch. I am not
numbed, I am much louder if anything, I feel like a lively tiger in a cage.
And I am waiting very patiently til I pounce and roar.
Make no doubt about that. Studios all over the world, have shut, closed permanently and
have set up shop on the Net. Instagram, Youtube, Facebook, Zoom...are just some of the
places where you can spend hours scrolling and learning discovering everything YOGA...
Hundreds of teachers are trying to make a living on line. The face of Yoga has changed
within a year. How will the remaining studios stay open? How will they get by with social
distancing? How will this economy recover? Will it?
One thing we know is that the Pandemic is creating major mental health side effects.
People’s mental health is deteriorating. We are social creatures, even if we are introverts.
We have the capacity to be light, and love. Yet so often the rude, cruel reality eats away
and it overshadows our ability to support, to rejoice, to celebrate, and honor each others
differences. This is where a Yoga practice can be key. Stepping on your mat to clear your
thoughts, and connect to your breath. The Pandemic has created a great pathway for yoga
too! Learning to breathe when in hard times. Breathing to reduce stress and tension, or
simply taking longer inhales and exhales, and then allowing yourself to be guided, to be
playful on your mat...this is a game changer. And Yoga Garden is at your service!
Being inclusive, means we INCLUDE YOU in our image. We want to have all shapes
and sizes, all abilities and styles. We have invited you to come and be our bodies! The
Community Challenge asks you to commit to a practice of 30 minutes for 30 days!
You will be so grateful to see how real people do yoga!
Today, one year into the Pandemic we are also asking you to support us in any way you
can. We offer multiple packages from challenges, to podcasts, and zoom classes! English
